Course Description: This course is designed to introduce sophomore students to the concept of AP English. Unlike AP European History, there is no College Board exam at the end of the year, but all the reading and writing are focused AP preparation. The course consists of an in-depth study of the works of various authors with the emphasis on drama. Literature will be analyzed from the point of view of the reader as well as the writer. The literature will also be measured against the history of the period to see how it fits into its own time as well as all time. Throughout the year, writing skills will stress the application of analytical skills such as style, structure, diction, tone and syntax. There is also a major emphasis on mastering the skills to answer complex multiple-choice questions. Vocabulary will be supplemented from the works being studied and will be added to regular unit words. Vocabulary quizzes will take place every two weeks with assigned exercises to be worked on prior to assessment. Grammar will be addressed through instruction and students’ writing.
