Course Description: This course is designed to introduce sophomore students to the concept of AP English. Unlike AP European History, there is no College Board exam at the end of the year, but all the reading and writing are focused AP preparation. The course consists of an in-depth study of the works of various authors with the emphasis on drama. Literature will be analyzed from the point of view of the reader as well as the writer. The literature will also be measured against the history of the period to see how it fits into its own time as well as all time. Throughout the year, writing skills will stress the application of analytical skills such as style, structure, diction, tone and syntax. There is also a major emphasis on mastering the skills to answer complex multiple-choice questions. Vocabulary will be supplemented from the works being studied and will be added to regular unit words. Vocabulary quizzes will take place every two weeks with assigned exercises to be worked on prior to assessment. Grammar will be addressed through instruction and students’ writing.

Please look at the homework board tonight and each day until we see each other on Monday. I left one assignment which will take two class periods.
I know you will be great for the substitute. Work hard. The questions are challenging, but I know you can do it. Work with the partner you had today. Each group will need a PlayPad. Be sure to plug them back in or they won't be charged for the next class/day. Use a dictionary and/or a Bible to help you. YOU SHOULD COMPLETE THE QUESTIONS ON PAPER. ONE PER GROUP. TURN IN YOUR WORK AT THE END OF EACH CLASS PERIOD.
These people should be in charge of handing out and plugging in the devices.

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. First, I have reviewed almost all of the Chapter 1-4 questions. I like what I am reading. Good job. Please be sure to read chapters 5-7 by Monday. I listed a couple of questions below to help guide your reading.
1. What do you think about Pearl? How does Hawthorne craft the character of Pearl?
2. What is hypocrisy? Do you see instances emerging in the novel? If you don't see it yet, please do not Spark Note it.
3. Is your view of Hester changing?
Also, please continue to work on your Character Study of Hester. Use the template found on Moodle. YOU SHOULD TURN YOUR CHARACTER STUDY OF HESTER AT TURNITIN.COM. Please submit this by 11:30PM on Tuesday evening. No late work. Budget your time.
So many of you have busy schedules, so I wanted to give you a heads-up. We will be reading chapters 8-11 for Thursday. This will give us insight into Roger Chillingworth. We will have a class discussion about this character, please come with something to contribute. Your annotations should focus on Chillingworth.
Finally, our tone words are much better than the first group. I will be posting these at some point this week. Thank you for paying attention to the dreaded comma. We are making strides with our semicolons too.
God bless,
Mrs. Carter
