Description

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce sophomore students to the concept of AP English. Unlike AP European History, there is no College Board exam at the end of the year, but all the reading and writing are focused AP preparation. The course consists of an in-depth study of the works of various authors with the emphasis on drama. Literature will be analyzed from the point of view of the reader as well as the writer. The literature will also be measured against the history of the period to see how it fits into its own time as well as all time. Throughout the year, writing skills will stress the application of analytical skills such as style, structure, diction, tone and syntax. There is also a major emphasis on mastering the skills to answer complex multiple-choice questions. Vocabulary will be supplemented from the works being studied and will be added to regular unit words. Vocabulary quizzes will take place every two weeks with assigned exercises to be worked on prior to assessment. Grammar will be addressed through instruction and students’ writing.

Assignment

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.  For Monday, please read chapters 21-23 in  The Scarlet Letter.  We will discuss these during Monday's class.  With regard to the multiple choice questions, I will give you the correct answers on Monday. For some reason, I am having a difficult time accessing the questions.  I want to make sure I give the correct response for each question.  I will give you the information on Monday.  Block some time off Monday evening to complete this assignment.

As always...

1. Go to church
2. Do something nice for one of your parents.
3. Say a prayer for someone who needs it.

God bless,
Mrs. Carter

Due:

Assignment

1.  Read through chapter 19 in The Scarlet Letter for Monday.
2.  Begin thinking about your role in the group presentation.  Remember, it is a group project, but each person should have a role.  This means each person should have a slide/slides he or she constructs.  These should contribute to the analysis of the chapter.  You are not discussing plot line; it is about analysis.  Also, you should address Hawthorne's literary style. After our quiz on Monday, your group will have time to work.  Using your school email is a great way to communicate with your group members.
3. I am working on your Character Analysis of Hester.  They look good.

Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs. Carter

GO DAWGS!

Due:

I am assuming everyone has read through Chapters 11. Please read through Chapter 14 for Monday. You should do a Level Two Question for each chapters (11 through 14). Do these on the computer and print out two copies. These should be  brought to class on Monday. Do not email them to me.  If you don't have a printer, email them to yourself and print them in the library before class.
God bless,
Mrs. Carter

Assignment

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.  First, I have reviewed almost all of the Chapter 1-4 questions. I like what I am reading.  Good job.  Please be sure to read chapters 5-7 by Monday.  I listed a couple of questions below to help guide your reading.

1. What do you think about Pearl?  How does Hawthorne craft the character of Pearl?

2. What is hypocrisy?  Do you see instances emerging in the novel?  If you don't see it yet, please do not Spark Note it.

3.  Is your view of Hester changing?

Also, please continue to work on your Character Study of Hester. Use the template found on Moodle.  YOU SHOULD TURN YOUR CHARACTER STUDY OF HESTER AT TURNITIN.COM.  Please submit this by 11:30PM on Tuesday evening.  No late work.  Budget your time.

So many of you have busy schedules, so I wanted to give you a heads-up. We will be reading chapters 8-11 for Thursday.  This will give us insight into Roger Chillingworth.  We will have a class discussion about this character, please come with something to contribute.  Your annotations should focus on Chillingworth.

Finally, our tone words are much better than the first group. I will be posting these at some point this week.  Thank you for paying attention to the dreaded comma.  We are making strides with our semicolons too.

God bless,

Mrs. Carter
