STUDY NOTES for QUIZ on Monday, April 10 - comparatives and superlatives
After studying my notes and sample quiz items below, want more practice?  Go to the lesson on COMPARISIONS OF INEQUALITY and try your hand at this basic quiz and mini-test from studyspanish.com.

Amigos,

Here's what you need to know for your quiz.  Memorize and be able to use the following formulas with the following words in mind:

más = most
menos = least

iCUIDADO! Careful! These are irregular -
  • mejor que = better than             el* mejor de todo = the best of all
  • peor que = poorer/worse than   el* peor de todo = the worst of all
  • mayor que = older than             el* mayor de todo = the oldest of all
  • menor que = younger than        el* menor de todo = the youngest of all
(*el must change to la/los/las to agree with the subject)

HOW TO FORM...
Comparative: más/menos + adjective* + que
*Notice how the adjective agrees in number and gender with the noun it modifies.
Examples:
  • Tomás es más simpático que su hermana, Elena. (Thomas is nicer than his sister, Elena.
  • Elena es menos simpática que su hermano. (Elena is less nice than her brother.)
Superlative: definite article (el,la,los,las) + más/menos + adjective* (+ de "todo")
*Notice how the adjective agrees in number and gender with the noun it modifies.

Examples:

Elena es la peor persona de todas mis amigas. (Elena is the worst person of all my (girl)friends.)
iElla es la más antipática persona de todo tiempo! (She is the meanest person of all time!)

Now here's two examples for the quiz:

Directions: Create three sentences following the model below.

ex:  Mi hermanita/ Un bebe/ Los perritos (más lindo)

YOU would write:

Mi hermanita es   linda.
Un bebe es   más lindo que mi hermanita.
Los perritos son   los más lindos de todo.

Now try this:

ex: yo / mis padres/ mi abuela (viejo)

Yo _______  ______________.
Mis padres ________  ____________  _________  yo.
Mi abuela ____  _____  ____________________  ____  todo.

Answers:
Yo soy viejo(a).
Mis padres son   mayores que yo.*
Mi abuela es   la mayor de todo.

*Again! Don't forget about subject-verb agreement AND noun-adjective agreement!  Those rules from Spanish 1 still apply here.

iBuena suerte y hasta lunes!

TEST  QUIZ on Thursday, 2/23/17 - Preterite Tense vs. Imperfect Tense

By now you know that there are two different kinds of ways to speak about things in the past: preterite and imperfect.  You also may recall that the ways that you conjugate verbs in the preterite (lots of irregulars!) and the imperfect (Much simpler: -aba/ía).

Now, we are going to put the two together.  This week you will learn clues that will show you when to use the preterite (actions completed in the past) and when to use the imperfect (ongoing actions in the past or descriptions of things in the past).

Cut and past these links and follow to the lessons.  Study them Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to help you learn the material that will be covered on Thursday's quiz.

As always, we will review on day before (Wednesday) to see what your quiz will look like!

I look forward to listening to your "Dejame un mensaje" project over the Mardi Gras break as well as seeing what we can accomplish this week with the
preterite vs. the imperfect verb tenses!

Sra. Smith

Due:

Assignment

For homework on Tuesday, follow the link above and complete the two stories about Superman.  You will need to choose between the preterit or imperfect form of the verb.

What I REALLY LIKE about this exercise is that it tells you in the box above the paragraph two things:

  1. Did I get it right? (yes/no), and...
  2. What is the grammatical reason behind the use of either the preterit or imperfect.
Play with this several times until you get it right.  You will need to have EXCELLENT knowledge of these two paragraphs to complete our quiz review in class on Wednesday!

iBuena Suerte!

Due:

Assignment

Quiz using imperfect tense of verbs is on Wednesday, el 15 de febrero.  Please be sure to study the ways to form the AR and ER/IR endings of imperfect verbs.  Also, you will need to be able to recognize the verbs IR and SER in the imperfect.

Another great link to notes and a little quiz (at end of notes) can be found by pasting this into your browser:

WHAT WILL THE QUIZ LOOK LIKE?
We have already been working with these verbs today with our story about Dan and Beyoncé.  Your class' original story will be presented in paragraph form and you will answer some reading comprehension questions about the story.  You will also need to answer a few questions about yourself.  For example:

?Cuándo tú eras niño/a, qué querías ser? (When you were a child, what did you want to be?)
?Cuándo tú eras niño/a, creías en monstruos abajo (under) de tu cama? (When you were a child, did you believe in monsters under your bed?)

As always, let me know if you have preguntas!
Sra. Smith:)

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 3...Telecomunicaciones...I won't lie.  It's going to be a doozie (sp?).

We are going to have some new vocab words for sure, so I have linked you with a Quizlet to get you going.  There will be a quiz on these words on Thursday, February 9th, so get to studying.

Also, we will learn a new verb conjugation...speaking in the past about on-going actions.  In teacher-ese (teacher talk), this is called the IMPERFECT.  We will not only have a Quizlet to help you memorize these endings, but we will create a flip chart in class that will really help you organize your thoughts on how to tell the difference between when to use the PRETERITE (one-time action in the past) and the IMPERFECT (an on-going action in the past).

Memorization of words is easy...you just have to spend time playing games with these words.  Application of verb tenses is, well...it just takes a bit more time.  But with the assignments and games we will play with these tenses, I am confident we can work towards successfully using these new Spanish words together!

Due:

Assignment

Clases,

No written homework this weekend, however, here are some links to notes and quizzes that will test your knowledge of present tense BOOT verbs and past tense SLIPPER verbs.  Please note that the verbs we will focus on are:

Each link below is part of a VERB DRILL lesson.  You will see a button/link at top and bottom of each page that invites you to generate a quiz.  DO THIS!  Select the number of questions (the more the better) and then indicate "NO Vosotros"

Due:

Assignment

PRETERITE Tense verb test is Thursday, January 12. You will need to know the meaning and how to conjugate all verbs in your preterite packet.  Below is

A.) what to expect on your test as well as
B.) suggestions on how to study.

A.  There will be two sections.  The first section will have one subsection of each of the following types of PRETERITE verbs:
  • Regular AR and ER/IR verb endings
  • Irregular Altogether (ir/ser, ver, dar)
  • Irregular YO (gar, car, zar)
  • Irregular Stems+Hybrid endings
  • Slipper verbs
Each of these sentences will give you the verb and you must complete with the correct conjugation.

The second section will require you to call on ALL knowledge of preterite forms as you will change a sentence from the present to the past and then translate the past tense sentence into English (just like your quiz from last week).

Please use your packet (all pages: 1-12) to help you create flashcards to memorize not only the meaning but also the mechanics on how to conjugate these verbs. You will also want to use the studyspanish.com links from previous assignments to assist you in your memorization.

Lastly, we will practice Monday and Tuesday with the irregular stems+Hybrid endings (page 6 of packet) and the slipper verbs (page 8 of packet).

iBuena Suerte!

Dia de los Muertos Project - Each student will bring in the picture/photo of a loved one, close friend or family pet that has passed away.  You must print this out at home or in library before Tuesday so it will be ready for our craft time.  While colored photos are preferred, it is not required.

NOTE: You will receive your pictures back, but if it is an original, you must print a copy so you don't risk losing the only pic you have of your loved one.

In class next week, we will be decorate our photos by adhering them to colored paper.  Then, we'll add some string so that we can hang place them around our class OFRENDA, or altar.  (See OFRENDA picture, attached.)

You will only have one opportunity to get credit for this portion of the overall Dia de los Muertos project.  Failure to bring pic in will result in no credit.  If you know in advance you will be absent any day next week, then you must email me to get further instructions.

Other portions of your grade will include the coloring pages for our decorations and a skull mask (see attached SKULL pic).  My hope is that without spending a lot of money, we can still recreate the essence of an authentic Day of the Dead celebration.

Assignment

Reflexive verb packet is due Monday, October 24.

I won't lie...it is CHALLENGING! It will force you to pull deep into the recesses of your Spanish knowledge.  However, I want you to attempt to answer each one in the packet.  Use the first three pages to help.  Also remember to break down the conjugation layers: reflexive pronoun (based on the subject), conjugation of the verb (based on the subject) and and stem changes that are needed (based on little letters the side of infinitive...see page two of packet for these hints.

Fill in the words you do know. Put in English the words you are unsure of (like "meatballs"!?!...who knew that was

Again, I know that it will be a challenge, but when you complete this, it will tell us as a class what we can move on from and what we still need to spend time with.

I'm not asking for perfection, but I am asking for you to do this tonight, Friday and Saturday (DO NOT WAIT UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT!!!).  I look forward to seeing how much you have attempted and accomplished on Monday...before the threshold...lest you make me lose my mind a la Mr. Earl Simmons, AKA DMX (see attached pic).

This will be your first grade of the quarter, so let's start of solid.  Hope to see you en misa mañana, and have a great fin de semana.

:) Sra. Smith

We will review in class on Tuesday, then work on our presentations (to present on Wednesday and Thursday.
