Supply list:  a notebook/binder for class notes, assignments, etc. They should also purchase a set of dividers for the five sections. Label: Vocabulario, Gramática, Actividades, Tarea, Exámenes. Students should also have an English-Spanish dictionary( an inexpensive one will do).

Course Overview

Spanish 1 serves as an introduction to the Spanish language and culture.  Basic listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and sharing skills are developed.  At the end of Level I, students will be able to express themselves and engage in simple conversations in Spanish within the limits of their knowledge of vocabulary and structure.

Grading Scale: Grade is determined by the percentages indicated in the following categories:

         Tests/Projects:               45%

         Quizzes:                        45%

         Homework:                    10%

Grades are weighted by categories.  You cannot determine your average by simply adding your grades and dividing.

Attendance, Class Rules and Keys to Success

Attendance is extremely important to success in a foreign language.  When you come to class, remember that you have to come on these terms:

  • You are expected to participate and cooperate fully and actively
  • We work as a class
  • Arrive on time and be seated before the tardy bell rings
  • Use class time for Spanish work only
  • Bring all materials to class everyday
  • Let the teacher know when you need additional help or explanations
  • Maintain high expectations for yourself
  • Follow all school rules and procedures in this class
  • You are not allowed to use online translators.  This is considered plagiarism and will result in a "0" on the assignment.
  • Extra credit work:  the only extra credit that I give is for Spanish Mass attendance once a quarter and attendance at the 2 Hispanic festivals that occur in Mobile. Proof of attendance at these functions will be required from the parent.

Make-up Work

When absent, it is the students’ responsibility to get the missing assignment(s). The teacher is absolved of any responsibility for the student's negligence in this matter and will record a "0" grade for each assignment missed during the absence if student does not make arrangements with the teacher. Refer to the Student Handbook for the time allowed for make-up work and missed tests.
