Description

Syllabus for Latin I - updated August 10, 2014

Latin Club

Please remember to check "Links" on my main page for information relevant to all classes, such as the list of Latin prayers (with links to videos to help with pronunciation).

Latin I emphasizes basic sentence structure, Latin vocabulary acquisition, and English derivatives, as well as those Latin phrases and quotations commonly used in English. Students also learn the geography of the Roman Empire, an overview of Roman history, and an introduction to Roman and Greek mythology. This course gives a student the ability to write more effective sentences in English and provides an essential foundation for the study of a modern language.

This worksheet was handed out in class on Tuesday and is due at the beginning of class on Thursday.

Due:

Assignment

Check Net Classroom to see if you have an M for this assignment:
Houses/Fur (date:  9/15)
Some people took the reading home to finish, but I'm not sure I took it up the following day. If you have an M for THIS assignment, you may receive full credit by turning in the reflection at the beginning of class on Monday, September 29.

Due:

Assignment

If you did not finish the reflection on Roman rooms and furniture, you may read the article here. After reading each secion (one on rooms, one on furniture), write a reflection on what you found to be different and what you found to be similar between ancient Rome and the modern day. Turn it in at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

REMINDER:  If you need to retake Quiz 2 for the last time, you must notify me by the end of the day on Wednesday that you will be taking it in the morning (7:20) or in the afternoon (3:10) on THURSDAY, 9/18.

Due:

Assignment

Choose 6 nouns (2 masculine, 2 feminine, and 2 neuter) from vocabulary litsts 1-4. Choose three adjectives from the same lists.

Decline each noun-adjective pair (a total of 18 pairs) in all five cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative). Pay careful attention to the gender of the noun and the proper declension of the adjective:
Feminine noun + 1st declension adjective
Masculine noun + 2nd declension adjective
Neuter noun + 2nd declension adjective (but remember the Neuter Rule).

Neuter Rule for Nouns and Adjectives:
1.  The accusative singular will match the nominative singular.
1.  The nominative and accusative plural always end in -a.

You may handwrite OR type your pairs, but be aware that this will take some time. Do not wait until late Sunday night.

Due:

Assignment

Review vocabulary from Pauca Verba 3 (you can also download Pauca Verba 1-2) and take note of the assignment at the bottom of the page.  (Worksheet given in class on Tuesday - complete for homework, due Wednesday)

New lists:  review every night for the first week that you have the list.
Old lists:  review at least one each night.

You may use QUIZLET to review vocabulary.
- Each Pauca Verba has a link to a flash card set on Quizlet.com.
- Create an account with your real name (so I know who's using it).
- Sometimes you will be assigned a specific list to review. When you don't have a specific assigment, you may use Quizlet or your notes.

CONSTANT REVIEW OF VOCABULARY - including writing practice sentences or trading sentences with a friend to translate - is necessary. People have two "sets" of vocabulary words.
1) Recognition (passive) - a person knows what the word means when he or she reads/hears it but would never think of the word on his or her own.
2) Expression (active) - a person uses the word when writing or speaking to express himself or herself; the person is not just repeating a word the other person used.
How do you move words from recognition to expression? Using them - a lot! Some studies suggest that a student must encounter a word 5 times before he or she knows how to use it correctly, but that's really just a passive level of use and understanding. Active use requires many more encounters with the word.

Due:

Assignment

You may retake the practice quiz as many times as you'd like. When asked for a verb form, all you need to do is put the specific form of the verb requested; you do not have say "1st person" or anything else. The proper ending shows that you understand the person, number, and tense.

Due:

Assignment

Go to Quiz.com to complete this practice assignment on nouns and verbs. You MAY use your notes, but do your own work.

If you need extra practice, take this more than once; the questions will be different each time.

Read all questions carefully and proofread your answers.

Remember to use your student e-mail account password. All student accounts should have reverted to the password given to you in class.

This assignment will be graded for completion, but it is in your best interest to make sure you understand what you're doing. Put forth your best effort.

Due:

Assignment

If you need to retake the quiz, it is YOUR responsibility to schedule the make-up date before or after school. Please notify me in class on Friday or by e-mail ([email protected]).
