The McGill-Toolen softball program certainly created a buzz this spring announcing the hiring of Hall of Fame Coach Tony Scarbrough. The legendary coach spent 53 years as an educator and coach, 36 years at Baker High School. Scarbrough's career record is an impressive 1734-580 including seven state championships; three slow pitch and four fast pitch. In 2007, his Baker team set a state record with 79 wins in a season, breaking the program's previous record of 78 wins set in 2005. The remarkable feat earned him National Coach of the Year honors by the NHSCA and the NFHS associations in 2007. Scarbrough coached three Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year winners while at Baker; Tara Donaldson 2004, Meghan Harbuck 2007 and Lacey Sumerlin 2015. In 2016, Coach Scarbrough was inducted into the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame, and is also a member of the Mobile Hall of Fame.
Coach Scarbrough is genuinely excited to revitalize the Yellow Jackets softball program. Scarbrough has visited with prospective student-athletes at our partner schools and on campus looking to build from the ground up from within. McGill-Toolen has a long history of outstanding female athletes and athletic programs. The goal is to add softball to McGill’s winning tradition of championships. A key ingredient to that success will be player skill development and bringing together a roster of athletes ready to learn and win! Coach Scarbough has a pretty good history of doing just that.
Scarbrough is a graduate of Vigor High School and the University of South Alabama. He’s been married for over 40 years to the love of his life, Joyce Sterling Scarbrough, who is also a Vigor graduate and valedictorian. Coach Scarbrough has six children, five daughters—Tonya, Tory, Tracy, Tia, and Treasure, and one son, Tony Jr. Welcome to JacketNation Coach!
