The Eleanor Marston Benz Library is an active partner in the educational process at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. Its mission is to gather, organize, preserve, and provide access to the information resources necessary for the school to achieve its educational goals. The McGill-Toolen Eleanor Marston Benz Library resulted in 1971 from the merger of the libraries of the former McGill Institute for Boys and Bishop Toolen High School for Girls, a prelude to the complete merger of the two schools in 1973. Eleanor Benz developed the floor plan and masterminded the herculean undertaking, then remained to be head librarian until 2002. The Catholic High Schools Alumni Association of Mobile each year gives the proceeds from the Joe Perez Memorial Golf/Tennis Tournament to the library to fund technology needs and to purchase books. The alumni association also raised money in the 1994 “Finding Roots-Gaining Wings” capital campaign to fund the inclusion of a large conference room when the library was expanded. The room is utilized by administration, faculty, parent and student groups for various purposes.
