Linda ZoghbyLinda Zoghby
Convent of Mercy Class of ’67

Linda Zoghby was given the opportunity artists dream of, when on one hour’s notice, she made an unscheduled debut as MiMi in La Boheme at the Metropolitan Opera. Some of her many engagements include Metropolitan Opera leading roles opposite Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, and the leading soprano for the conducting debut of Placido Domingo at the Met. She has also appeared countless times at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center and in opera and symphony halls in Boston, Dallas, Santa Fe, Houston, San Francisco, London, Caracas, Santiago and Jerusalem. Zoghby also gave command performances for Presidents Carter and Reagan in the East Room at the White House. She has recorded three Haydn operas and also has a CD, Christmas with Linda Zoghby.

After graduating from Convent of Mercy in 1967, where she performed leading roles in school musicals held in the Portier Center, Zoghby received her bachelor and masters degrees in vocal performance from Florida State University. At age 22, she won first place in the Young Artists Awards sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing. At age 23, Zoghby won first prize in the WGN-Illinois “Auditions of the Air.” She then received a Resident Scholarship for professional training and enhancement from 1972 through 1976 at The Juilliard School’s American Opera Center and completed additional long-term study with the Metropolitan Opera Music staff, conductors and coaches.

Currently Zoghby is an assistant professor of music at the University of South Alabama and also provides studio instruction of private voice students.

Zoghby is married to John Shepler and has three children: Ashley; August Emile; and Victoria , McGill-Toolen ’05. Her parents are Josephine and Emile Zoghby, McGill Institute, Class of 1936. All of her brothers and sisters graduated from Catholic high schools in Mobile: Mary Jo, Convent of Mercy, ’63; Emile, McGill Institute, ’64; Diane, Bishop Toolen, ’69; Edmund, McGill Institute, ’73; Alex, McGill-Toolen, ’74; and Melanie, McGill-Toolen, ’76.
