McGill-Toolen Class of ’84

Helen Rogers was a star track athlete both at McGill-Toolen and during her college career. She played soccer her freshman year in high school but ran track and cross country all four years. She was named Runner of the Year in 1984 and was the 2 Mile state champion and runner-up in the state in the 1 Mile in 1984. In cross country, she was named to the all-county team in 1982-84, was Runner of the Year in 1983 and ’84, and was 2nd at state in 1984. Off the field, Helen was a member of the National Honor Society.

After graduating from McGill-Toolen in 1984, she attended Clemson University on a full scholarship for cross country and track. For all four years at Clemson, Helen was named an academic All-American and received All-Atlantic Coast Conference academic honors. She was the ACC 10,000 meter track champion and in her senior year she as named All-Atlantic Coast Conference. While in college, Helen was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Alpha Chi Omega and Phi Kappa Phi. She graduated from Clemson, magna cum laude, with a degree in biochemistry and enrolled in the University of Alabama at Birmingham for medical school. At UAB, she was voted Best Female medical student in 1994 and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She graduated magna cum laude, in obstetrics and gynecology, and performed her residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville. While finishing her running eligibility of 1 year, she did graduate work in molecular biology. She currently practices medicine with Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates, P.C., in Mobile.

In the words of her brother, Mike Rogers Jr., McGill-Toolen '82, "Fortunately for many women and their families in the Mobile area, she chose to return to her home town after she received her medical degree. She has built an exceptional reputation as a leading Obstetrician and Gynecologist in our area. Hardly a week passes without someone telling me how wonderful Helen is and how well she handled their pregnancy and delivery.”

Helen’s civic activities include membership in the Mobile Medical Society. She supports the Junior League of Mobile; Penelope House, a shelter for battered women; the Cystic Fibrosis Society; UAB Scholarship funds; the March of Dimes; the American Cancer Society and the Mobile Association for the Blind.

Helen Rogers attended St. Pius X School for kindergarten through grade 8 and is still a member of that parish. Her mother is Linda H. Rogers and her father, Michael C. Rogers Sr.,deceased, was a member of the McGill Institute Class of 1961. In addition to her brother, Mike Jr., McGill-Toolen ’82, her sister Julie graduated from McGill-Toolen in 1983. Another brother, Ross, who is deceased, attended McGill-Toolen his freshman year.
