Patrick J. Ponder
McGill Institute Class of ’51
Patrick Ponder graduated from McGill Institute in 1960 and was very active in the athletic program. He played baseball, basketball and football and earned All-City honors in baseball.
Following his graduation from McGill, he entered Southeastern Louisiana University and received his bachelor of arts degree in accounting in December, 1963. He was a member of the baseball team, the “13 Club” and also served as treasurer and vice-president of the student body. He made the Dean's List every semester he was in college, graduated cum laude in 3½ years and was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He is a Certified Public Accountant, having passed all parts of the CPA exam at the first sitting,
Within the community, Ponder has served as Commissioner of the City of Mobile Water and Sewer Service System and as a member of the Republican Executive Committee of Mobile County. He is a member of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants. His civic awards include listings as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America and in “Personalities of the South.”
Ponder has served as National Trustee of the SLU Alumni Association. He and his wife have established the Patrick and Gail Ponder Endowed Scholarship Fund for needy students of SLU's College of Business.
Ponder is married to Gail G. Ponder and they have one child. He retired in 1995 from the accounting firm of Ponder and Muscat where he was a partner. He resides in Fairhope, Alabama, and attends St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
