Lonnie L. MixonCDR Lonnie L. Mixon, USCG (Ret.)
McGill Institute Class of ’51

Lonnie Mixon is one of the more highly decorated officers in the U.S. Coast Guard. From his enlistment as a seaman recruit in December of 1951 to his retirement as a commander in 1973, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross twice, the Air Medal eleven times, three Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Medals, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Coast Guard Outstanding Unit Commendation, the Navy Combat Action and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign ribbons, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

As a search and rescue pilot, he was credited with saving sixty people from positions of peril in situations ranging from the Cuban missile crisis to the Vietnam War. In 2001 he was inducted into the Alabama Military Hall of Honor.

A former altar server for both St. Bridget’s in Whistler and the Cathedral, in the summer of 1950 Mixon assisted a missionary priest in the construction of Our Sorrowful Mother Church in Grove Hill. While at McGill, he played varsity football during the 1949-50 season and has retained his ties to the school through his 15-year membership in the McT Yellow Jacket Club. He has also coached football and baseball at St. Dominic’s. He is a member of VFW Post #49. Currently, he serves as a Trustee of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District.

He and his wife, Dr. Colleen Byrd Mixon, have two daughters, both graduates of McGill-Toolen–Kim M. Verneuille, MT ’75, and Kelly M. Adger, MT ’81–and four grandchildren.
