McGill Institute Class of ’51
Jacob was a triple dipper into the athletic pool of sports during his time at McGill Institute. After playing both football and basketball his freshman year, he went on to add baseball for his remaining years at McGill and did well in all three sports. In 1949 he was a member of the champion football squad. In 1950 he helped the basketball team win the city and district titles, then go on to place 2nd in the state championship. He was also a member of the 1950 champion baseball squad. In 1950-51 he was elected to the All-City football and basketball teams.
In an unsigned newspaper article, he is credited with holding the basketball team together time and again when the Yellow Jackets threatened to fall apart at crucial times during games. His ability to handle the ball and set up plays made him most indispensable. In 1951 he helped the Jackets win the city baseball championship for the sixth straight year. His skill at first base led sports reporter Dennis Smitherman to say that he is a “candidate for pro baseball.”
After graduating from McGill in 1951, he attended Spring Hill College for a year and then joined the Air Force in 1953. He played basketball and baseball with the base teams.
He went to work for the Corps of Engineers in 1958 and retired in 1988. From 1968 to 1975 he was a City of Mobile Little League umpire and referee for high school football and basketball. He currently works part time at Quail Creek Golf Course in Fairhope as a starter or marshall. He was named 2001 Golfer of the Year for the Quail Creek Golf Association.
He and his wife Margaret have one daughter, Leigh Jacob Parks, who graduated from McGill-Toolen in 1978.
