Angelo Chapman Harris IIIAngelo Chapman Harris III
McGill Institute Class of ’66

Angelo Harris was an outstanding student/athlete during his time at McGill. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the varsity cross country team and the varsity track team. He earned three varsity letters in each of these sports, and during his senior he won the Alabama state championship in the mile run. He was the recipient of the McGill Student Athlete Award in 1966 and also received an athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama.

Harris entered the University of Alabama after graduation from high school and was a member of the varsity cross country team, the varsity track team, the Army ROTC, and the “A” Club. He was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Conference cross country team three times and the All-Conference track team four times. In 1968 he was the Southeastern Conference champion in the 1- and 2-mile runs. He held the SEC record in the latter event.

Harris was also the holder of five University of Alabama cross country and track records. These were the 1- and 2-mile runs in both indoor and outdoor track and the 4-mile cross country. In 1969, he served as secretary of the “A” Club and was named the Outstanding Varsity Athlete in Army ROTC. He was named to the Dean’s List in 1970 and the following year he received the Joseph E. Hirsh Memorial Award as the outstanding student athlete of the 1971 graduating class.

Harris has been a member of the faculty at McGill and McGill-Toolen since 1971, teaching in the Social Studies Department and coaching cross country and track. From 1998 to 2004 he served as Athletic Director. The Banks-Harris track built on campus in 1998 was named for him and his mentor, Coach Peter Banks, as a tribute to their dedication to the school and the cross country and track programs. In 2003, Harris was recognized by the local sports community when he was tapped for the Finely Award. When he was named Mobile County’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2005, it was the third consecutive year he received that honor.

Harris is married to Sandra Currie Harris, BT ’61, and they are the parents of Jenny H. Sechler, MT ’94; and Adam, MT ’98. He has a master of education degree from the University of South Alabama and is a member of Little Flower Parish.
