Gretchen Koppersmith Boykin
McGill-Toolen Class of '92
A member of the Dirty Dozen 1990 state championship team and the 1991 6A State All-Tournament Volleyball Team, the All-County Softball Team for 3 years, and lettering for three years in basketball, Boykin is one of McGill-Toolen's few triple-threat female athletes. Because she was also a member of the National Honor Society, she was a natural choice for the McGill-Toolen Female Student/Athlete of the Year award in 1992.
Boykin went on to play volleyball on full scholarship at the University of Montevallo and accumulated impressive honors, both scholastic and athletic: the Fred Sington Award for the top female athlete in the state in 1996; the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award, Montevallo's highest honor; the A. O. Duer Award, the NAIA's highest individual award for excellence in athletics, leadership and academics; named All-American four times and Academic All-American twice. She was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi , Omicron Delta Kappa , Kappa Omicron Nu and Lambda Delta honorary societies and graduated summa cum laude from Montevallo in 1996.
After Montevallo, she pursued an interest in health care, serving an internship in dietetics at Pemrose-St. Francis Healthcare Center in Colorado Springs , CO . A registered dietician and member of dietetic associations on the local, state, and national levels, she currently serves as head volleyball coach at McGill-Toolen. She also serves on the Philosophy Committee there and volunteers for the Community Health Fair and the American Cancer Relay for Life.
Her love of volleyball has been a constant throughout her life. She coached club volleyball in Birmingham from 1993-96. She was the head volleyball coach for Spring Hill College and in only three years took the Lady Badgers to the NAIA national tournament by virtue of winning the Gulf-South Conference and the NAIA Region XIII championship. She was selected as Gulf-South Conference and Region XIII Coach of the Year in 2003.
She is married to Brian Boykin.
