Eleanor Marston Benz
Visitation Academy Class of ’34

Eleanor Marston Benz graduated from the Visitation Academy in 1934 with a Classical degree.
She first came to McGill Institute in 1955, the only woman on the faculty. She remained as librarian until 2003, except for 5 months when she and her husband were in San Francisco.

In 1972, a year before the merger of the all-girls Bishop Toolen High School and the all-boys McGill Institute, she was responsible for combining the two schools’ libraries and the relocation to the library’s present site. For nearly 50 years Mrs. Benz added a special quality to life at McGill and McGill-Toolen as she dispensed band-aids, coffee, counsel, moral support, intellectual stimulation and wonderfully entertaining tales of old Mobile–all while she unhurriedly went about the business of running the library. On May 17, 1989, the McGill-Toolen Library was dedicated and named the Eleanor Marston Benz Library in her honor. She retired in May 2003, and in September of that year she was named Librarian Emerita. She continues to visit the library and is always warmly welcomed.

Mrs. Benz has two children--Sarah Benz Phillips, CM ’64, and John, MI ’60–and three grandchildren--John Richardson and Lauren and Olivia Phillips.
