James P. “Pat” Balthrop
McGill Institute ’41
Pat Balthrop was an honor roll student and very active in extra-curricular activities during his time at McGill. He was president of his senior class, a member of the Glee Club for all four years, on the McGillian staff for four years and co-editor his senior year. He also played varsity football, varsity basketball, and varsity baseball. He was All-City and All–District in basketball.
Balthrop graduated from Spring Hill College in 1948. During is time there, he was on the varsity basketball team for three years. He was on the Dean’s list his senior year and was named to Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society and to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Balthrop served for three years in World War II as a Navy pilot after gaining his wings at Pensacola, Florida. After college he worked as a realtor for 52 years. When he retired he was Division Senior Vice-President of John Howard Homes.
He was married to former Dorothy Morehead (deceased) and they had four sons: Samuel; James Jr.; Michael; and Troy, all who graduated from McGill. He and Dorothy have seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is an active member of Corpus Christi Parish in Mobile.
