Steven G. Alsip
McGill Institute Class of 1973
Steve Alsip graduated in 1973, the last class to graduate from McGill Institute. He was president and a member of the marching band, concert band and jazz ensemble. In addition, he wrote for the school newspaper, was a member of the National Honor Society, and received academic and band letters for all 4 years. Steve was valedictorian, a National Merit Scholar, and received the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal and the John Philip Sousa Award.
Upon graduation, Steve attended Spring Hill College where he played intramural sports and was a member of the Mobile Club, the Knights of Columbus and Phi Eta Sigma. He graduated summa cum laude with a BS in biology in 1977, and then attended the University of Alabama Medical School on academic scholarship, graduating cum laude. While at Alabama, Steve was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Tinsley Harrison Society.
Steve returned to Mobile in 1985 as the Chief Medical Resident at the USA School of Medicine and remains a Clinical Assistant Professor. He entered private practice in 1987 as an infectious disease specialist at Infection Limited, PC. He was a co-organizer of the Mobile Catholic Physicians and has served as vice-president of the Alabama Physicians for Life.
Steve has been active in St. Dominic and St. Pius parishes. Currently at St. Pius, he is a member of the choir, Eucharistic minister, 4th degree Knight of Columbus, and a school volunteer. At McGill-Toolen he organized the Band Parents’ Association, the Yellow Jacket Band Boosters, which lead to the organization of the Alumni Band, serving as president for 2 years. He helped stage many school musical productions. An Eagle Scout himself, he has been a den leader, assistant Scoutmaster and chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting. The Chickasaw Civic Theater has benefited from his expertise as actor, director, set builder and board member. Steve received the Gautrelet Award from Spring Hill College and was named McGill-Toolen Alumni Volunteer of the Year in 2003-04.
Steve is married to the former Mary Jo Sinchak, Bishop Toolen ’77. Their 3 children are graduates of McGill-Toolen: Rebecca and Kathryn ’01 and Tommy ’05; as is his brother, Jorge ’77.
