Fifty–five students from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School have been awarded the title of “AP Scholar”. They scored 3 out of 5 on at least 3 or more AP Exams. Twelve of them were designated as AP Scholars with Honor because they scored 3.25 or higher on at least 4 AP exams. Thirteen others are AP Scholar with Distinction by scoring 3.5 or higher on at least 5 AP exams.

FRENCH I (CP2) - 1 credit
This course introduces the student to oral and written French through vocabulary building and grammar study, enabling the student to construct short sentences on many topics. Geography and civilization are introduced. Students should be motivated to study the language and have a curiosity about other cultures.
FRENCH II (CP2 and Honors) - 1 credit
In order to qualify for this course, a student must have completed French I with at least a C average and have teacher approval. This course provides students with a greater ability to understand spoken French and to express themselves using French both orally and in writing. The study of civilization is pursued in more detail. If enough students with at least a B average are interested, an Honors II course may be offered.
FRENCH III (Honors) - 1 credit
This course, offered to students who have completed French II with at least a B average and who have teacher approval, is designed to perfect oral ability, to continue the study of grammatical structures, to increase cultural knowledge, and to introduce French literature. Most of the material is in French to help students think in this language.
FRENCH IV (Honors) - 1 credit
This course requires students to use French for active communication by developing the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The criteria for selecting a student for this course should include first year student interest and motivation, demonstrated ability in previous French courses and a teacher recommendation.
LATIN I (CP2) - 1 credit
Latin emphasizes basic sentence structure, Latin vocabulary acquisition, English derivatives as well as those Latin phrases and quotations commonly used in English. This course gives a student the ability to write more effective sentences in English and provides an essential foundation for the study of a modern language.
LATIN II (CP2 and Honors) - 1 credit
In order to qualify for the CP2 course, a student must have completed Latin I with at least a “C” average and have teacher approval. Honor students must have at least a B average. Second year Latin presents advanced grammatical structures. There is a continuing emphasis on English derivatives as well as Latin phrases and quotations. Translation of Greek myths, stories about famous people, and Roman history provide the student with a rich cultural background in literature, history, and geography.
LATIN III (Honors) - 1 credit
In order to qualify for this course, a student must have completed Latin II with at least a “B” average and have teacher approval. In the third year, the student continues to master a number of Latin constructions and reviews systematically the words, forms, and rules of syntax studied. The student develops an ability to understand Latin by translating Caesar's “Commentaries on the Gallic Wars” and works of other authors.
SPANISH I (CP 2) - 1 credit
This course introduces the student to the basics of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and limited reading, thus enabling communication in simplest Spanish with acceptable pronunciation. A brief introduction to Spanish history and culture in two hemispheres is also included. The student should have a strong desire to study language.
SPANISH II (CP2 and Honors) - 1 credit
The CP2 course is open to students who have completed Spanish I with a minimum average of C and have teacher approval. This course is designed to increase oral ability, to continue study of grammatical structure, idiomatic usage and vocabulary, to develop reading and writing skills, and to continue the study of Spanish culture. Honors students should exhibit a strong desire to continue the study of the language after the second year, and they must have at least a B average.. This class will allow students to pursue the four language skills in greater depth and at an advanced pace. Teacher recommendation required.
SPANISH III (Honors) - 1 credit
This course is offered to students who have completed Spanish II with at least a “B” average and who have teacher approval. It is designed to perfect aural/oral abilities, to review and continue the study of grammar, and to increase cultural knowledge of Spain and Latin America. This course will introduce the student to Spanish writers and poets and will continue honing the reading and composition skills of the students. The level III Honors class is conducted in Spanish, and most of the material is in Spanish to help the students to think in the language.
AP SPANISH IV (Advanced Placement) - 1 credit
The Advanced Placement Program in Spanish Language is intended for those who have chosen to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students who enroll should already have a basic knowledge of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking peoples and should have attained a reasonable proficiency in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. These qualifications may be attained in a variety of ways, but it is anticipated that most students will have completed a minimum of three formal years of training at the secondary level prior to enrollment.
The objectives for the course:
Course content will reflect intellectual interest shared by the students and teacher (the arts, history, current events, literature, culture, sports, etc.). Materials include recordings, films, newspapers, and magazines. The course seeks to develop language skills that are useful and applicable to various activities and disciplines. Students will be required to present prepared topics orally and they will practice with timed responses.
